About Chayangtajo
Perched on a hilltop at an elevation of around 1,500 metres, Chayangtajo Village in East Kameng district is often described as the “gateway to the Himalayas” in western Arunachal Pradesh. Surrounded by snow-dusted peaks in winter and lush forests year-round, it offers panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, fertile valleys, and winding rivers below.
This remote yet scenic settlement is known for its pleasant climate, rich tribal culture, and its role as a starting point for treks into the higher altitudes of the Pakke-Kessang region.
Travel Experience
Reaching Chayangtajo feels like slowly unwrapping a gift. As you ascend the winding mountain roads from Seppa, the district headquarters, layers of mist reveal bamboo groves, orange orchards, and the occasional hillside monastery. The village’s charm lies in its balance between serenity and raw Himalayan wilderness.
Early mornings are magical ,the sun rises behind distant snowy peaks, illuminating the clouds and painting the valley in shades of gold and pink.
Travellers can explore nearby streams, hike to vantage points, or simply wander through the traditional houses, each built with bamboo, wood, and tin roofs. The gentle rhythm of rural life here is a refreshing change for anyone seeking to escape urban chaos.
Unique Local Touch
Chayangtajo is home to the Nyishi tribe, whose vibrant culture is reflected in their festivals, weaving traditions, and unique headgear adorned with hornbill beaks and feathers. Visitors during Nyokum Yullo, the agricultural festival held in February, can witness dances, folk songs, and rituals that connect the people to their land.
Local cuisine — rice, smoked meats, wild greens, and fermented bamboo shoots . It is best enjoyed in a Nyishi household, where hospitality is warm and genuine.
