About Sessa Orchid Sanctuary
Perched in the lush folds of West Kameng district, the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary is a 100-square-kilometer biodiversity hotspot dedicated to one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most exquisite natural treasures—orchids.
Declared a sanctuary in 1989, it harbours over 200 species of orchids, many of which are rare, endemic, and globally threatened. Located along the Bhalukpong–Bomdila highway, at altitudes ranging from 500 to 3,250 metres, Sessa is not just a botanical wonderland; it’s a scenic Himalayan escape where misty slopes, moss-draped trees, and cascading streams create a magical atmosphere.

Sessa Orchid Sanctuary was established to protect the rich orchid diversity of Arunachal Pradesh, which is part of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot. The sanctuary’s varied altitudes create unique microclimates, allowing both tropical and alpine orchid species to flourish. It also forms part of an important wildlife corridor, connecting Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary to other forested zones, making it vital for both plant and animal conservation.
How to Reach Sessa Orchid Sanctuary
By Air: Nearest airport is Tezpur (Assam), about 100 km away; Guwahati Airport is ~350 km.
By Rail: Nearest railhead is Bhalukpong, well-connected to Tezpur and Guwahati.
By Road: Located on the Bhalukpong–Bomdila road; taxis and buses are available from Tezpur, Bomdila, and Bhalukpong.
Local Entry Point: The sanctuary entrance is marked along the highway, and guided walks are available with prior arrangement.
Best Time to Visit
March–May & September–November – Peak orchid blooming season and pleasant trekking weather.
Monsoon (June–August) makes trails slippery but offers lush green landscapes.
