About Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary
Just a short drive from the bustling heart of Itanagar, the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush haven that protects over 140 square kilometres of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.
Stretching from the foothills to the rolling highlands of the Papum Pare district, this sanctuary is a vital green belt, safeguarding biodiversity while offering locals and travellers a peaceful nature escape. The forest is a mix of tropical broadleaf trees, bamboo groves, and riverine patches, crisscrossed by streams that feed into the Senki, Pachin, and Yagamso rivers.
Unique Experiences & Things to Do
Birdwatching Hotspot – Home to over 200 species, including hornbills, barbets, drongos, and the rare white-winged wood duck.
Nature Walks & Photography – Trails shaded by towering hollong and nahor trees, perfect for spotting butterflies and orchids.
Wildlife Encounters – Possibility of sighting macaques, capped langurs, barking deer, and even slow lorises.
Cultural Touchpoint – Close proximity to Nyishi tribal villages, allowing travellers to combine nature trips with cultural immersion.
Senki Viewpoint – Offers panoramic views of Itanagar city against the backdrop of misty forested hills.
Ecological & Cultural Significance
The sanctuary acts as the green lungs of Itanagar, regulating the city’s microclimate and serving as a vital watershed. For the Nyishi people, certain groves and water sources within the sanctuary hold sacred value. Seasonal restrictions on hunting and fishing have helped preserve its ecological integrity despite being near a growing urban centre.
