Spread over an area of about 200 acres, the museum is situated near Van Vihar National Park and can be accessed via Lake View Road or another road near the demonstration school.
The museum showcases different aspects of Indian culture and heritage through 12 indoor galleries and 8 open galleries. It includes a tribal habitat, a desert village, a Himalayan village, a mythological train, and a traditional technology park. Tribal folk art and culture are beautifully presented through painted rock shelters.
To enrich the experience, the museum has audiovisual archives, computerized documentaries, and ethnographic specimens. It has a reference library that has collections on anthropology, museology, archaeology, art, architecture, tribal studies, and more. All these resources offer abundant opportunities for students, researchers, filmmakers, and designers. The museum also organizes various educational programs, workshops, conferences, group discussions, symposia, cultural festivals, lectures, and artist camps.

Timing
The museum is open from 11 a.m. – 6.30 p.m. from March to August and from 10 a.m. – 5.30 p.m. from September to February, and it is closed on Mondays and national holidays.
