About Hazara Rama Temple
Unfolding the narrative of the Ramayana through its intricate carvings, the Hazara temple stands as a testament to the artistic prowess of the Vijaynagara empire. Dedicated to Lord Rama,the name “Hazara rama, which translates to “ a thousand rama,” is showcased in the temple by the multitude of Ramayana panels that adorn the temple walls.
History
The Hazara raza temple was commissioned by Vijaynagar king Devaraya II in the early 15th century. It served as a private sanctuary for the Vijaynagara kings and their royal lineage.
Architecture of Hazara Rama Temple
Initially, the temple was designed in a simple structure that had a sanctum, ardha-mandapa, and pillared hall. Over time, it underwent renovation with the addition of an open porch and exquisite pillars. Rising from a central stone platform, unique black stone pillars are one of the noteworthy features of the temple to observe.
The temple’s main entrance opens in the east with a small doorway leading to the durbar area.
A sprawling lawn situated beyond the temple provides a serene space for reflection. It extends to Supari Street. Hazara Temple is situated in a strategic location where you can see neighboring attractions like Lotus Mahal and Zenana Enclosure.
If we talk about the interiors of the temple, then they boast richly ornate columns. Earlier, the idols of Rama, Lakshmana and sita were kept inside the temple, but now they are no longer present in its palace An empty pedestal with three holes preserves their historical significance.
Intricate Bas-Reliefs
Narrating the entire Ramayana, the Hazara Rama temple is adorned with beautiful bas-reliefs. It vividly depicts the Ramayana story from Rama’s birth to his marriage, exile, Sita’s abduction, and the epic battle with Ravana. The exterior also features sculptures of animals like horses, elephants, and camels, adding to the visual storytelling.
