Situated strategically at Korlai in the Raigad district, Korlai fort is the scenic beauty of Maharashtra. The Portuguese fort, also known as Morro or Castle Curlew, was built in 1521 AD. It was established on Morro de Chaul Island under the permission of the Sultanante of Ahmednagar.
The fort had strategic military value in safeguarding the Revdanda Creek and fortifying Portuguese rule from Bassein to Korlai.
A Tale of Conquest and Resilience
The history of the fort is filled with a series of conquests and occupations. Portugal made initial attempts in 1521 AD to seize control of the fort. But their effort was repelled by the Ahmednagar Sultanate. In 1594, however, the Portuguese took control of the fort but later they had to face the challenge of insufficient manpower for its defense. To compensate for this, the Portuguese decided to dismantle the fort, leaving only the central tower and battery intact. Later, in 1739–1818 CE, the marathas took control of the fort, adding further to the fort’s historical narrative.
