In 1655 AD, the fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who recognized its strategic significance and renamed it Vyaghragad, meaning “Tiger Fort.” During the Maratha period, the fort was used as a secure stronghold and prison due to its naturally protected location. After the fall of the Maratha Empire, Vasota came under British control in 1818. Over time, many structures within the fort deteriorated, but the site continues to stand as a reminder of Maharashtra’s glorious past.

Trek Route
Since Vasota Fort lies within the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, visitors must obtain permission from the Forest Department office at Bamnoli before starting the trek.
From Bamnoli, a boat ride across the Koyna backwaters takes around 1.5 hours to reach Met Indavali, the base point of the trek. From there, a forest trail of approximately 5–6 km leads to the fort summit, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.
The Forest Office generally opens at 8:00 AM, and the first boats usually depart around 8:30 AM. Trekkers are required to return before evening, as staying inside the forest area after permitted hours is not allowed.
