Bhopal is a place of historical and cultural significance. The place that we will visit is the Gohar Mahal Palace, which was built in 1820 by the first female ruler of Bhopal, Qudsia Begum, also known as Gohar Begum. The palace is a stunning piece of architecture that sits tall on the banks of the serene Upper Lake. Let’s explore its historical and cultural significance.

Historical Significance of Gohar Mahal Palace

A perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture served as a center of culture and art during the Nawabi era. Gohar Mahal Palace was built in 1820 as the residence and workplace of the Begum. Intricate carvings and exterior decorations are testaments to the development and prosperity of Bhopal during that era.

Architectural Marvel

Surrounded by beautiful gardens and lawns, the splendid palace is a stunning three-story structure that is situated on the bank of a lake. It has two courtyards, the first being Diwan-e-am, where the common people were heard, and Diwan-i-khas, where people with special ranks were allowed to enter after permission.

Intricate woodwork and ancient paintings adorned the great hall of the palace, which overlooks the upper lake. Although this part of the palace has been closed for safety reasons, the palace is still a remarkable piece of architecture that transports you to the bygone era of Nawabs.

Restoration and Current Status

Gohar Mahal has undergone a restoration process that brings the Mahal its grandeur and original charm. It’s now open to the public and is used for exhibitions and displays of the culture, heritage, and history of Bhopal.
