The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, also known as Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in Velha Goa (Old Goa), India. This historic church forms part of a larger complex that includes a convent and remains fully functional to this day. Renowned for its religious and architectural significance, it stands as one of the major landmarks of Old Goa, reflecting the legacy of Portuguese colonial influence in the region.
Historical Background
The church was founded by eight Portuguese Franciscan friars and officially established in 1517. The current structure, however, was constructed by the Portuguese in 1661 during the era of the Portuguese Viceroyalty of India. Over time, it has come to be recognised as a notable 17th-century Roman Catholic establishment, representing both the religious devotion and architectural ambitions of the Portuguese in India. It exemplifies the historical and cultural fusion of Indian and European traditions during the colonial period.
Architecture & Structural Features
The architectural design of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is a stunning example of Baroque style. The facade is composed of three tiers, flanked by octagonal towers on each side. The main entrance is adorned with circular pilasters and a decorative rosette band, welcoming visitors into the barrel-vaulted central nave.
The crossing is rib-vaulted and supports the choir above. Internal buttress walls not only separate the chapels but also support a gallery on top, with frescoes featuring floral designs adding artistic richness to the interior. The combination of structural ingenuity and detailed artistry makes it one of Goa’s most visually striking churches.

As a Franciscan church, it houses several significant religious statues and artworks. Above the tabernacle on the main altar stands a large statue of St. Francis of Assisi and Jesus on the cross, while statues of St. Peter and St. Paul are positioned below. The central niche of the facade features a statue of St. Michael.
Painted panels along the nave walls depict scenes from the life of St. Francis, offering both spiritual inspiration and historical insight into the Franciscan order’s teachings and legacy in India. The church continues to serve as an active centre of worship for devotees.
