About Dashir lake
An easy half-day trek, Manali-Dashir Lake is a high-altitude hike around Manali. Offering trekkers a chance to experience the raw beauty of the Pir Panjal range, the climb takes about three hours from the roadside starting point.
The best time to attempt the trek is from June to October, when the surrounding meadows bloom and the trails are free of snow.
Located at an altitude of 3,950 meters, the lake is a serene alpine nestled in the slopes to the left of Rohtang Pass on the Kullu side.
The sacred glacial lake is often frequented by local shepherds and holds spiritual significance for people from nearby villages.
Starting the Trek
The trail to the lake begins near the last sharp bend near Rahla Falls on the iconic road to Rohtang Pass. Many travelers going toward Rohtang Pass stop to enjoy the cascading Rahla Falls.
As you climb up on the trail curving through forests of birch and deodar, a picturesque backdrop of valley emerges.
The trail is unmarked and not well-defined, so trekkers need to keep a careful eye on the ridgeline. The destination is on a small saddle above the road, which becomes visible after about an hour of steady ascent.
While you can’t see the lake from the road, the distinctive ridgeline acts as a reliable guide. Along the way, you’ll come across small stone cairns (locally called Shi) placed by shepherds and villagers—these age-old markers help hikers stay on course.
The terrain is a pleasant mix of grassy slopes, scattered rocks, and patches of wildflowers in summer, with panoramic views of the surrounding snow-draped peaks gradually opening up as you climb higher.
At the Lake
Perched on its alpine saddle, Dashohr Lake is a tranquil sight surrounded by majestic snowfields and distant ridgelines. Local legends link the lake to various folk tales, and it is sometimes visited by shepherds during their seasonal migrations, adding a layer of cultural charm to its natural beauty.
Further toward Lahul
For trekkers with time and stamina, the adventure doesn’t have to end at Dashir Lake. You can extend your hike along the ridgeline towards Rohtang Pass, reaching the pass top in about two additional hours. This extension rewards you with sweeping views of the Lahaul Valley on the other side and the mighty peaks of the Pir Panjal range, including glimpses of glaciers and far-off passes.
Quick Tips for Trekkers:
Guide recommended: Since the path is unmarked, hiring a local guide is a smart choice for first-timers.
Weather: Always check the weather forecast, as sudden mountain storms can roll in even during the summer season.
Respect the site: Dashohr Lake is considered sacred by locals—avoid camping too close to the water and do not pollute the area.
For anyone seeking a short, scenic escape near Manali that combines easy trekking, spiritual lore, and commanding Himalayan views, the Dashohr Lake Trek is a perfect choice—proof that even a half-day climb can bring you face-to-face with the dramatic beauty of Himachal’s high country.
