The origins of Tara Devi Temple go back more than 250 years, rooted in both history and legend. It is believed that a king from the Sen dynasty, devoted to his family deity Goddess Tara, once traveled through the dense forests of this region—then known as Juggar.
Exhausted from his journey, the king fell asleep in the forest, where he experienced a powerful vision. In his dream, Maa Tara appeared along with Bhairav (the guardian deity) and Hanuman. They urged him to reveal their presence to the world and establish a place of worship.
Moved by this divine message, the king donated around 50 bighas of land and commissioned the construction of the temple. The original idol of the goddess, carved in wood and following Vaishnav traditions, was installed here, marking the beginning of the temple’s spiritual legacy.
Legacy and Spiritual Significance
The story of Tara Devi Temple didn’t end there—it continued through generations of the Sen dynasty. Later, Raja Balbir Sen is said to have had a dream in which the goddess expressed her desire to be worshipped atop Tarav Parvat (Tara Devi Hill).
Honoring this vision, an idol made of Ashtadhatu (a sacred blend of eight metals) was crafted and installed in 1825. This idol remains the central focus of worship today, symbolizing strength, protection, and divine energy.
Even now, members of the Sen family continue their age-old tradition of worshipping Maa Tara during Shardiya Navratri. This continuity of devotion adds a living cultural layer to the temple’s spiritual importance.
