Showcased in promotional campaigns for Jaipur tourism, Hawa Mahal is one of the top attractions near Delhi and is located just 6 km away from Jaipur Junction Railway Station.

A remarkable extension of the Magnificent City Palace, Hawa Mahal was constructed under the patronage of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. The architecture of the palace was constructed by Chand Ustad, who designed it to emulate the crown of Krishna, the revered Hindu deity.

Architecture of Hawa Mahal

Crafted from exquisite red and pink sandstone, Hawa Mahal is a prime example of Rajputana architectural style, consisting of five stories. The structure is placed on a fifty-foot-high podium and has 953 small windows, also known as Jharokhas. Windows were designed to allow royal ladies to observe bustling street life while remaining concealed. Windows creates a pleasant and refreshing atmosphere within the room, facilitating an influx of cool air.

On entering Hawa Mahal, a courtyard encircled by a charming two-story building welcomes visitors. The lower floors of the mahal are spacious, while the top three stories of the palace boast single-room thickness. Stairs are not available on the upper floor. You have to pass through narrow ramps to move from one room to another.

Hawa Mahal stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage. Within the palace’s premises lies a small museum housing ancient artifacts. From the heights of Hawa Mahal, visitors can see the breathtaking panoramic views of Jaipur city. Currently, Hawa Mahal comes under the care of the Archaeological Department.
