Overview and History of Nahargarh Fort

A testament to the rich history of Rajasthan, Nahargarh Fort on the Aravalli Hills is an architectural marvel. A must-visit destination in Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort is located at a distance of 6 km from Jaipur Junction Railway Station.

Offering a stunning sight, Nahargarh Fort looks stunning when it illuminates at night. From the vantage point, it offers breathtaking views of Jal Mahal, Man Sagar Lake, and panoramic views of Jaipur. 

Nahargarh Fort served as a retreat place for the ruler of Jaipur. It was built by Sawai Jan Singh II in 1734.  Nahargarh Fort served as a formidable defense for Jaipur, along with Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort over the surrounding hills. Legend says that Nahargarh Fort faced obstacles due to the spirit of a Rathore ruler named Nahar Singh Bhomia roaming in the region. Later in 1868, Sawali Ram Singh redesigned the fort to enhance its grandeur. Adding murals and intricate designs, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh further renovated the fort in 1880.

As evening sets in, Nahargarh Fort becomes a stunningly beautiful sight when it is illuminated. From the fort, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal, and the enchanting city of Jaipur.

Architecture of Nahargarh Fort

A blend of Indo-European architecture, Nahargarh Fort has numerous well-preserved structures. You can enter the fort through Tadigate (the main gate). A temple dedicated to the deity of Jaipur is on the left of the entrance gate. Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Sawai Madho Singh, is another remarkable feature that has a cluster of 12 suites for queens and another suite for the king himself. All rooms are interconnected with each other. To meet the public and address their grievances, the fort also houses Diwan-I-AM. 

During history, Nahargarh Fort was never attacked. In the 18th century, Maratha forts signed a treaty when they besieged Jaipur. In the mutiny of 1857.

Entry fees and Timing

The entry fee for visitors is Rs 50 for an Indian and Rs 200 for a foreigner.
