About Chattergala Pass
Chattergala is a high mountain pass that connects Bani in Kathua district to Bhaderwah in Doda district. At an elevation of approximately 12,000 feet (3,658m), it is tucked in the Chamba-doda ranges of the greater Himalayas.
The place is not known to many, but we know it is gradually gaining popularity among trekkers, off-road adventures and nature lovers due to its raw beauty and strategic location.
Geographical Significance
Surrounded by alpine meadows, snow-covered peaks and dense forest, the pass is a relatively unexplored region of the western Himalayas. The pass serves as a shortcut route that significantly reduces travel time between the Bani valley in the south and the Bhaderwah valley in the north.
Area around the pass is rich in biodiversity, lush pastures, wildflowers and wildlife like Himalayan monals, ibex, and musk deer. The pass is buried under heavy snow during winter and only accessible from November to April.
How to Reach Chattergala Pass
* From Bani (Kathua District)
The road to Chattergala starts from Bani, which is a serene hill town known for its greenery and rivers. The road is steep and rugged and often used by local shepherds and adventurous bikers. It takes around 2 hours to cover a distance of 35-40 km by a rough mountain road.
* From Bhaderwah (Doda District)
From bhaderwah the road connects via Chinta and Jai valley that are popular local destinations. Traveling through thick pine forests and high-altitude meadows makes the journey very beautiful.
* Nearest Major Access Point :
* Jammu city (around 180–200 km) is the major rail and road hub for accessing this region.
