About Kunchikal Falls
One of the stunning waterfalls in the Shimoga district, Kunchikal Falls, is located at Nidagodu village near Masthikatte. Located approximately 52 km from Agumbe, the beautiful waterfall captivates visitors with its natural splendor.
Kunchikhal, the 116th highest waterfall globally, falls from a height of about 455 meters. The waterfall is formed by the Varahi River, which cascades over rock structures near Hulikal Ghati Temple. Waterfalls are a crucial source for one of Karnataka’s hydroelectric projects and are surrounded by lush greenery.
Developments
Underground power generation and construction of the Mani dam in Masthikatte have reduced the flow of water to the falls. In the monsoon season, when heavy rain sets the fall becomes visible. After the construction of dam, the area comes under the restricted zone that can be obtained at Hosangadi village (approximately 15 km away).
The best time to Visit
The best time to visit the Kunchikal Falls is during the rainy season, from July to September, when the waterfall showcases an impressive flow.
Timing
The operating hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and entry is free.
