About Omkareshwara Temple
Standing as a testament to devotion and redemption, Omkareshwara Temple is an architectural gem that is situated in the heart of Madikeri. Located just 1 km from the Madikeri bus station, the temple is an essential stop in Coorg’s tapestry.
Omkareshwara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was constructed by King Lingarajendra in 1820 CE. According to the legend, he killed a Brahmin due to his political ambitions. After killing, the king starts getting nightmares for his wrongdoing. So to free himself from the remorse, the king, on his advice, constructed a temple named Omkareshwar temple. He brought shivalinga from the Kashi and installed it inside the temple. So this way, the temple became his path to redemption.
Architecture
The temple seamlessly melds Islamic and Gothic architectural styles, adorned with a central dome and four minarets.Panchaloha graces the windows, while intricate paintings on the walls tell silent tales of devotion.
