About Unkal Lake
A vital source of drinking water for the twin cities of Hubli and Dharwad, Unkal Lake is a picturesque lake located in the Unkal locality of Hubli. A cherished picnic spot for locals and tourists alike. If you are in Hubballi and not sure where to go in the evening, then this is a good place to explore . It is spread over an area of 200 acres and located just 6 km from the Hubli railway station.
History of Dharwad Lake
Well, Dharwad as a region has a special place in the history of India as it came under different rulers. From the Marathas, Mughals, and Tipu Sultan, and finally the British East India Company, the region has experienced so many developments in the form of historical relics to artificial lakes. Though well abundant with natural resources and beautiful surroundings. The rulers of the region have made a beautiful corollary between nature and humans.
One such fine example of this is Unkal Lake, which is spread over an area of 200 acres. Established 900 years ago, it was constructed originally for the purpose of water supply that was later expanded for irrigation purposes.
Activities at Unkal Lake
There is a kids park , a small food court at the entrance, lots of vendors selling eatables and many benches are available for people to sit and relax as well. The entire perimeter of the lake is 6.5 km and many people come for morning and evening walks in the park. Beside the lake there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. However, due to low maintenance, the lake itself is not very clean. Plastic and Pooja items are seen floating.
At the other end of the lake there is a Buddha Park with a very beautiful, calm, and serene statue of Lord Buddha in a sitting pose.
Origin
Unkal Lake gets its origin from the Bedti River, which originates from the Western Ghats and drains into the Arabian Sea.
A Century-Old Reservoir
The lake holds not only natural allure but has a history spanning more than 110 years. An annual fair dedicated to Saint Shri Siddappajja is held near the lake, which is also known as its karambhoomi.

The 900-year-old Chandramouleshwara Temple dates back to the Chalukya period. It was built in the period of the 11th-12th century, housing an idol of Lord Shiva with beautiful engraved decoration on the walls of the temple.
