A testament to the city’s commitment to wildlife conservation, Mysore Zoo, also known as Chamarajendra Zoological Garden, is a great palace to visit in Mysore. Located just 3 km from Mysore railway station, the zoo was established in 1892 by Sri Chamarajendra Woodeyar.
Historical Roots and Design
Before converting to a zoo, the Mysore Zoo was a modest 10-acres area designed by a German landscaper and horticulturist in the late 19th century. Later, it was converted into an impressive 250 acres, which has become an integral part of Mysore.
A Haven for Biodiversity
Inside the Mysore Zoo, there is a diverse collection of animals. Visitors can marvel at elephants, hyenas, tigers, lions , king cobras, and deer. For bird lovers, there is an array of birds to watch.
If we talk about the most notable highlights, then Jaguars, African elephants, and giraffes are the notable highlights that will captivate your attention.
Karanji lake
For further enriching the visit, the zoo has Karanji Lake, where you can opt for a unique boating experience.
Mysore Zoo is open to the visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with Tuesdays marked as the weekly closure.
Timings and Special Features
For the best wildlife sightings, it’s recommended to visit during the early morning hours, before 11 a.m. For those who prefer not to walk, battery-powered vehicles are available. It charges Rs 200 for adults and Rs 150 for children above 5 years.
Practical Information
Entrance fees are Rs. 100 for adults, Rs. 50 for children above 5 years, and Rs. 100 for still cameras and Rs. 200 for video cameras.
On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, an additional Rs. 10 is charged on the entrance fee.
