When is the best time to visit Kaziranga National Park?

The best time to visit Kaziranga National Park is between April and November. For safety concerns, the park closes sooner during the monsoon than the other major national parks in India. As a result, the best time to visit Kaziranga Tiger Reserve is between April and November.

Kaziranga National Park’s History

Kaziranga’s history begins in 1904 when the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, and his wife, Mary Curzon, went on an expedition to this region. They were surprised to see no traces of rhinos. Mary Curzon encouraged her husband to take action to conserve the one-horned rhinoceros, whose number was rapidly declining. As a result, in 1905, a 232-square-kilometre portion of Kaziranga was designated as a Proposed Reserve Forest. Kaziranga was designated a protected forest in 1908, with an additional 152 square kilometres added.

It was renamed Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 after being dubbed Kaziranga Game Sanctuary in 1916. Kaziranga was not recognised as a national park until 1968 when the territory was increased to 430 square kilometres. In 1985, UNESCO designated Kaziranga National Park as a World Heritage Site.

Flora and fauna

Kaziranga is home to over 42 species of fish, 9 species of amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, over 491 species of birds, and 35 species of mammals. There are almost 86 tigers (2000 census), 1048 elephants (2002 census), 2048 rhinos (2009 census), 1431 buffalo (2001 census), and 486 swamp deer among the bigger species. Kaziranga also has around 546 kinds of plants. Kaziranga is believed to hold 86 tigers, the greatest tiger density in the world (1 tiger for every 5 km2, according to the 2000 census).

Due to the deep, long vegetation, visitors seldom encounter tigers. The rhinoceros is the park’s true star. Kaziranga also boasts one of the remaining completely wild Asian water buffalo herds.
