About Athirappilly Falls
Located in the Thrissur district of Kerala, about 70 km from Kochi, Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in the state and one of the most iconic natural attractions in South India.
Cascading from a height of 80 feet and stretching across 330 feet in width, the falls roar down the Chalakudy River, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Surrounded by lush Sholayar forests, Athirappilly is often called the “Niagara of India” for its grandeur and beauty.
Scenic Beauty and Ecosystem
The falls are set amidst the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to rich biodiversity. The surrounding forests shelter elephants, bison, leopards, and the endangered Great Hornbill, making the area an ecological hotspot. The Chalakudy River itself is lifeline to the local ecosystem, flowing through rocky terrains and green valleys before plunging down to form the magnificent Athirappilly Falls.
During monsoon (June–September), the falls are at their most spectacular, with thunderous water flow and mist rising high into the air. In contrast, winter and early summer provide calmer views and safe trekking opportunities.
