Vamana Temple, dedicated to Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is a captivating Hindu temple that belongs to the Eastern group of Khajuraho Temple. With its awe-inspiring architecture and exquisite craftsmanship, the Vamana temple is a must-see for visitors.
Recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, the temple was constructed between the years 1050 and 1075 AD. The temple is an integral part of the Khajuraho group of monuments that enthrall visitors with its mesmerizing beauty and intricate architectural details.
Architecture
Sharing similar properties with other temples in Khajuraho, the layout of the temple comprises an entrance porch, vestibule, Maha-mahamandapa, and sanctum. All these together create a harmonious environment for devotees and tourists alike.
Adding to its allure, the temple’s Shikara showcases a magnificent fretwork of Chaitya-arches. Maha-mandahpa is decorated with a Samvarana roof that sets the temple apart from the others.
Instilling a sense of peace and devotion, an exquisite idol of Lord Vamana is kept inside the Sanctum of the Vamama temple. Surrounding the deity are Charkapurasha on the left and Sankhapurusha on the right. As one enters the sanctum, an intricately designed doorway catches the eye. Mithunas ( amorous couples), delicate lotus petals, and dancing Ganas embellish a beautiful seven bands.
The exterior of the temple is designed with intricate sculpture displaying apsaras in various poses. This further adds to the france and elegance of the temple exterior. It portrays scenes from everyday life in which musicians and dancers played an important role during the time and were all immortalized in stone.
Timings:
The Vamama temple is open to visitors from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering visitors the spiritual experience and architectural wonder of that time.
By Car:
Reaching Vamana Temple by car is a convenient option, offering flexibility and comfort. Khajuraho is well-connected by road to major cities and towns in the region.
By Train:
For those preferring rail travel, Khajuraho Railway Station serves as the closest railway junction. Vamana Temple is approximately 1.8 km away, and you can hire an autorickshaw or a taxi to reach the temple conveniently.
By Air:
