Historical Significance
The story of the Aga Khan Palace begins during a time of hardship. Its construction took around five years and was initiated to provide employment to people affected by a severe famine. Built at a cost of about ₹12 lakhs—quite substantial for that era—it was as much a humanitarian effort as it was an architectural project.
However, the palace gained deeper significance during the Quit India Movement. It was used as a place of internment for prominent leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai, and Sarojini Naidu.
Tragically, both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai passed away during their confinement here. Their samadhis (memorials), located within the palace grounds, are quiet and moving reminders of the sacrifices made during India’s struggle for independence.
Architecture & Design
Architecturally, the palace is a fine example of the Indo-Saracenic style, blending Indian and European elements. Italian-style arches, long corridors, and large open spaces give the structure a timeless elegance.
The palace complex spreads across 19 acres, with the main building occupying about 7 acres. A wide corridor runs around the structure, enhancing its symmetry and openness. Inside, spacious halls and well-lit rooms reflect the grandeur of its design.
