About Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary
Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO site located in the majestic Western Ghats of Maharashtra. The sanctuary is famous for its dense forests, rich biodiversity, and serene landscapes. Spread across 423 sq km, Sanctuary is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and trekkers alike. The Koyna River flowing through the sanctuary is dammed by a Koyna dam that gives rise to Shivsagar lake. The protected area is an essential stop for those who want to spend some quality time.
Best Time to Visit
The sanctuary is open year-round, but different seasons offer unique experiences:
Winter (October to February): This time of the year is best for wildlife spotting and birdwatching. Cool climate ideal for trekking activities in the outdoors.
Monsoon (June to September): During monsoon, the sanctuary landscape turns into a green paradise with misty landscapes and cascading waterfalls. Hence, some trails may become inaccessible due to heavy rains.
Summer (March to May) Its hot in summer so it’s better to avoid but it’s also a good time for spotting large mammals near water bodies.

By Road: Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is well-connected by road. It is 50 km from Satara, 190 km from Pune, and 290 km from Mumbai.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is Chiplun (45 km), from where local transport can be used.
By Air: The nearest airport is Pune International Airport (190 km).
