About Nandankanan Zoological Park
Nandankanan Zoological Park, located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, is one of India’s most prominent zoological and botanical attractions. Spread over 437 hectares, it combines a zoo, botanical garden, and sanctuary around the picturesque Kanjia Lake.
Established in 1960 and opened to the public in 1979, it is renowned as the first zoo in India to be a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
Attractions and Highlights
The park is home to more than 160 species of animals, including mammals, reptiles, and birds, many of which are rare and endangered. Nandankanan is especially famous for its white tigers, which were first born here in 1980, making it globally recognized for tiger conservation.
Visitors can also spot Asiatic lions, gharials, pangolins, elephants, and migratory birds that flock to the wetlands of Kanjia Lake.
The botanical garden within the park showcases a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic plants, spread over 75 hectares, including medicinal plants, cacti, orchids, and aquatic flora. A butterfly garden and reptile park further enhance the experience.
Unique attractions include the safari rides, where visitors can observe lions, tigers, bears, and herbivores in open natural enclosures, and the aquarium, which houses freshwater and marine species.

Nandankanan is not only a recreational spot but also an important conservation and research center. It plays a critical role in the breeding and rehabilitation of endangered species, including gharials and white tigers. It also provides environmental education and awareness programs, fostering a connection between humans and nature.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to explore Nandankanan is during the winter months from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and migratory birds enrich the sanctuary. Summers can be hot, while monsoon rains enhance the greenery but may restrict movement within the park.
How to Reach
Nandankanan Zoological Park is located about 15 km from Bhubaneswar city center. It is well connected by road, with regular buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis available from Bhubaneswar. The nearest railway station is Bhubaneswar Railway Station (approx. 18 km), and the Biju Patnaik International Airport is around 20 km away, making it easily accessible for tourists.
