Madhya Pradesh is home to many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The wildlife sanctuary that we will talk about is the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established in 1994 and covers an area of 46 square kilometers in Orchha town. Though comparatively smaller than other wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh, the sanctuary is a perfect place to visit if you are visiting the Orchha. Wildlife”s major source of water is the Betwa River, which flows through the sanctuary and provides water for the wildlife residing within the sanctuary.’

Orchaa Wildlife Sanctuary includes a wide range of animals, including blue bulls, monkeys, jackals, nilgais, sloth bears, wild pigs, and many more. A birdwatcher’s palace, nearly 200 species of birds come here in the migratory season. The migratory birds that include kingfishers, woodpeckers, owls, black swans, geese, and jungle bush quails.

Importance of Betwa River

The Betwa River is very important to the ecology of the Orchcha Wildlife Sanctuary.  It acts as a water source for the wildlife that resides inside the wildlife sanctuary. The sightings of wildlife, especially during the sunset, are a must-do on your itinerary. Besides this, several adventure activities like fishing, river rafting, boating, trekking, camping, jungle trekking, and hiking run on the Betwa River.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is during the winter season, from November to June. Avoid going in the monsoon season, when animals hide due to heavy rainfall. During these months, the two rivers flood the area and the sanctuary closes.
