According to legend, Mehrunnisa, a noble princess, fell deeply in love with a young commoner. Their relationship was strongly opposed by her father, who considered the match unsuitable. Determined to separate them, he allegedly ordered the young man’s assassination. When Mehrunnisa learned of the attack, she rushed to save her beloved, but arrived too late. Heartbroken by his death, she is said to have taken her own life.
Overwhelmed with grief and regret, Hakim built this mausoleum in memory of the star-crossed lovers and buried them together. Folklore also suggests that a large pond once surrounded the tomb so that no one could approach it. Although the pond has long disappeared, the monument continues to stand as a poignant reminder of a tragic love story that has become part of Chanderi’s local heritage.
Architecture of Shahzadi Ka Roza
Shahzadi Ka Roza is an excellent example of the Indo-Islamic architectural style that flourished in Chanderi during the medieval period. Constructed from grey sandstone and raised on a platform approximately 12 feet high, the structure immediately catches the eye with its elegant proportions and detailed craftsmanship.
The monument consists of two levels. The lower level is enclosed by walls, while the upper level features a series of graceful arches that give the building an airy appearance. Similar to several other historic structures in Chanderi, the mausoleum displays five blind ogee arches and intricately carved serpent-shaped brackets, architectural elements also seen in the famous Jama Masjid of Chanderi.
The interior contains a square chamber housing two sarcophagi believed to be associated with the legendary lovers, although their exact identities remain uncertain. The central hall is crowned by a larger dome surrounded by four smaller corner domes. While some portions of the structure have deteriorated over time, traces of decorative glazed tiles can still be seen, offering a glimpse of the monument’s former grandeur.
