About Kutralam Falls
In the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, the Kutralam Falls / Courtallam Falls is located in the western ghats, Tenkasi District. Kutralam is not a single waterfall but a collection of multiple falls, including Main Falls, Five Falls, Tiger Falls, Old Courtallam Falls, and Small Falls. Each fall has its own unique charm and attracts different types of visitors.
Peraruvi (Main Falls) is the largest waterfall in Courtallam, about 60 meters high. The water slows down as it hits a deep pool, making it safe for bathing. Chitraruvi (Small Falls) has a gentle flow and separate natural spots for men and women to bathe. Shenbagadevi Falls flows through shenbaga trees and has a temple for the goddess Shenbagadevi Amman.
Thenaruvi (Honey Falls) is 40 meters high, flowing between two big rocks, with honeycombs visible when it’s dry. It’s dangerous and usually closed to the public, but people still visit. Aintharuvi (Five Falls) has five streams of water. Pazhathotta Aruvi, or “VIP Falls,” is only open to VIPs.
The falls are situated in the town of Courtallam (or Kutralam), which is often referred to as the “Spa of South India.”
Kutralam is a popular medical tourist destination that draws thousands of visitors during peak season. It has facilities like resorts, hotels, and spas, making it a convenient retreat for those seeking relaxation and wellness. Particularly, ayurvedic therapies and massages are quite popular among the visitors.
