The serene and picturesque destination known for its natural beauty, religious significance, and tranquil ambiance
Thirumoorthy Waterfall
The waterfall originates in the forested hills and cascades down amidst boulders, creating a mesmerising sight. Visitors often trek a short trail through scenic surroundings to reach the falls. The water flow is especially impressive during the monsoon season (July–September).
Thirumoorthy Temple
Also known as the Sri Amanalingeswarar Temple, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma. Legend says that Athri Maharishi and his wife, Anasuya Devi, resided in these hills, and the Gods of the Hindu trinity had come down to test their devotion.
Mythology
The gods once asked Anasuya Devi to offer prayers to them in a state of nudity. She agreed and, through her devotion, turned the gods into babies. She cared for them, feeding and putting them to sleep in a cradle. When her husband, Atri Maharishi, returned and heard what had happened, he praised the three Gods sleeping as babies. Later, the gods returned to their original forms and granted Anasuya a boon. As per her wish, she was blessed with three children: Sage Durvasa (an avatar of Shiva), Dattatreya (an avatar of Vishnu), and Chandra (the Moon, an avatar of Brahma).
This is why the area is called Thirumoorthy Hills. The place, situated at the base of the hills near the dam, is peaceful and ideal for both devotees and tourists.
Thirumoorthy Dam
It serves as a major irrigation source and a scenic picnic spot and is built across the Palar River. The area around is surrounded by verdant hills, and visitors should enjoy the serene waters and the views of the surrounding mountains.
