About Koteshwar Mahadev Temple

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is a famous temple that is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. On the banks of Rudrapryag, the temple is located inside a cave and is dedicated to Shiva. It is situated at a distance of 6 km from the town of Rudraprayag on the right bank of Alaknanda. 

Numerous shivlings in the form of stalagmites are made of water that is dripping inside the cave. According to popular folklore, pandavas were in search of Shiva to repent for the killing of their kin. When pandavas find out the lord Shiva, he immediately turns into a cave and assumes the form of shivling among the numerous shivlings. That’s why the place is called Koteshwar Mahadev.
