About Raj Bhawan
Nestled in the scenic hill town of Nainital, the Raj Bhawan (Governor’s House) stands as one of the most striking reminders of India’s British-era architectural legacy. Located in the Tallital area, this grand estate continues to serve as an important administrative residence while also attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and heritage.
History
Raj Bhawan, Nainital, was originally built during the British period to serve as the summer residence for the Governor of the North Western Provinces. The foundation stone was laid on 27 April 1897, and the construction was completed in 1900.
The building was designed by architect F.W. Stevens, along with engineers F.O. Oertel and H.S. Wildebood. After India’s independence, the property was repurposed as the official summer residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Over time, with administrative changes, it became one of the two Raj Bhawans in Uttarakhand—the other being in Dehradun.
One notable historical connection is that Sarojini Naidu, India’s first woman governor (of Uttar Pradesh), was associated with this residence during her tenure.
Architecture and Design
Raj Bhawan is a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture, reflecting the grandeur and elegance of British design sensibilities.
The structure is built using a combination of high-quality materials, including:
- Marble.
- Red sandstone.
- Dolomite limestone.
- Fine woods such as pine, cypress, limewood, and shisham.
The estate is spread over nearly 220 acres, making it one of the largest governor’s residences in India. The interiors and surrounding estate feature several elevated viewpoints, including Jhandidar Modi Height and Munsi Height, which offer beautiful panoramic views of Nainital’s landscape.
The Raj Bhawan Golf Course
One of the most unique features of the estate is its golf course, which was developed in 1936. Spread over approximately 45 acres, the course is affiliated with the Indian Golf Union and remains a rare example of a heritage golf course located within a gubernatorial estate.
Surrounded by pine forests and rolling hills, the golf course adds a distinctive charm to the property and is a key attraction for visitors and golf enthusiasts.
Visitor Information
Although Raj Bhawan is an active government residence, it is partially open to the public under regulated entry.
