About Velugonda Project
The Velugonda Project is an important irrigation scheme located in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, constructed across the Naguleru River, a tributary of the Veligonda River system.
This project serves as a lifeline for farmers in the semi-arid regions of Prakasam, supporting agriculture, groundwater recharge, and drinking water supply to nearby villages.
History and Purpose
The Velugonda Project was conceived to stabilize irrigation in Prakasam district, which frequently experiences droughts and water scarcity due to erratic rainfall. The project aims to store monsoon water, regulate its flow, and provide a reliable water source for paddy, pulses, groundnut, and other crops.
It also forms part of a broader initiative to improve water management in the Veligonda and Gundlakamma river basins.
Structure and Capacity
Type of Dam: Earthen and masonry structure with a spillway.
River: Built across the Naguleru River.
Storage Capacity: The reservoir can store approximately 2–3 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water.
Irrigation Potential: It supplies water to over 25,000 acres of farmland in the surrounding mandals of Prakasam district.
Additional Benefits: Apart from irrigation, the project supports drinking water supply to nearby villages and helps in groundwater recharge.
Agricultural Importance
The Velugonda Project is critical for sustaining agriculture in Prakasam’s semi-arid regions, particularly in Markapur, Podili, and Yerragondapalem mandals.
By providing a reliable source of irrigation, the project enables farmers to grow two or even three cropping cycles annually, boosting both productivity and income in the region. Crops such as paddy, groundnut, and pulses thrive due to this water supply, which also supports horticulture and aquaculture activities locally.
Scenic Value and Tourism
While primarily an irrigation project, the Velugonda reservoir has picturesque surroundings with hills and agricultural landscapes. Local villagers and visitors occasionally visit the site to enjoy the backwaters, natural scenery, and peaceful environment. It remains an offbeat spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers exploring rural Andhra Pradesh.
Connectivity
By Road: The Velugonda Project is around 60 km from Ongole, the district headquarters of Prakasam, accessible by local buses, cabs, and private vehicles.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is Ongole Railway Station (60 km), which connects to major cities in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states.
By Air: The closest airport is Vijayawada International Airport (190 km), while Tirupati Airport (220 km) is also accessible for long-distance travelers.
