About Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Nestled along the banks of the Periyar River, about 60 kilometers from Kochi, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is Kerala’s very first bird sanctuary and one of India’s most celebrated avian reserves.
Spanning an area of around 25 square kilometers, it was established in 1983 on the recommendation of the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, who once described it as the “richest bird habitat in peninsular India.” Its dense evergreen forests, grasslands, and wetlands make it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Biodiversity and Birdlife
Thattekad is home to over 300 species of birds, making it a hotspot for ornithology. Visitors can spot both endemic and migratory species such as the Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, Ceylon Frogmouth, Indian Pitta, and the rare Sri Lankan Frogmouth.
Raptors like Crested Serpent Eagles and kites soar across the skies, while water birds like egrets, herons, and kingfishers thrive along the Periyar backwaters. The sanctuary also harbors butterflies, amphibians, and small mammals, enriching its ecological diversity.
Landscape and Experience
The sanctuary’s terrain is a mix of tropical evergreen forests, deciduous patches, and freshwater marshes, offering a mosaic of habitats. Walking trails through dense thickets bring visitors close to the calls and sightings of elusive bird species.
Birdwatching tours, often guided by local experts, are popular among travelers. The serene backwaters add to the charm, making it not just a birding site but also a peaceful retreat into nature.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal season to explore Thattekad is between November and March, when migratory birds arrive and the climate is pleasant. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times for birdwatching, as the sanctuary resonates with calls and active bird movement during these hours.
