About Bhitarakanika National Park
Bhitarakanika National Park, located in Kendrapara district of Odisha, is a unique ecological paradise renowned for its lush mangrove forests, rich biodiversity, and thriving population of saltwater crocodiles. Spread over nearly 672 square kilometers, it is the second-largest mangrove ecosystem in India after the Sundarbans and plays a vital role in protecting the coastal environment from cyclones and tidal surges.
The park is crisscrossed by a network of rivers, creeks, and estuaries, making it one of the most dynamic and scenic wetlands in the country.
Ecological Significance
The park is home to over 55 species of mangroves and associates, creating a natural breeding ground for countless species of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic life. It is particularly famous for housing India’s largest population of estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles, some of which grow to enormous sizes exceeding 20 feet.
Apart from crocodiles, Bhitarakanika supports a wide range of fauna including pythons, king cobras, monitor lizards, wild boars, spotted deer, and migratory birds. It is also a nesting ground for the endangered olive ridley sea turtles, which visit its beaches in large numbers.

The ideal time to visit Bhitarakanika National Park is between November and March, when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife sightings are at their peak.
During this time, boat rides are safe and enjoyable, and migratory birds enhance the natural charm of the mangroves. The monsoon season is less suitable due to heavy rains and flooding of water channels.
How to Reach
Bhitarakanika is well connected by road from major cities in Odisha. The nearest town is Kendrapara (50 km), while Bhubaneswar (130 km) is the closest airport. From Bhubaneswar, one can take a bus or taxi to Chandbali, Rajnagar, or Gupti, which serve as entry points to the park.
Regular boats are available from these locations to ferry visitors into the heart of the mangroves. The nearest railway station is Cuttack (100 km).
