About Sangai Festival
The Sangai Festival is Manipur’s flagship annual cultural event, celebrated every year in the month of November. Named after the endangered Sangai deer (Rucervus eldii eldii), which is found only in Keibul Lamjao National Park, this festival is a vibrant showcase of the state’s cultural heritage, traditional arts, indigenous sports, and eco-tourism potential.
Organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur, the event attracts visitors from across India and abroad, making it one of the most anticipated tourism highlights of the North-East region.
History and Significance
The Sangai Festival was first introduced in 2010 to promote Manipur’s unique identity and tourism opportunities. The name was chosen to symbolize the state’s pride and its rich biodiversity, as the Sangai deer is not only rare but also an emblem of Manipur’s ecological heritage.
The festival also acts as a cultural bridge, connecting the diverse ethnic communities of the state through a shared platform of celebration.
Venue and Duration
While the main events are held in Imphal, venues extend to other parts of the state such as Moirang, Keibul Lamjao, and Loktak Lake to give visitors a holistic experience. Spanning 10 days, the festival offers a mix of cultural performances, adventure sports, food fairs, and exhibitions.

Cultural Performances
Traditional dance forms such as Ras Leela, Pung Cholom, Thang-Ta (martial arts), and folk dances of tribal communities like Tangkhul, Mao, and Paite take centre stage. These performances narrate Manipur’s myths, legends, and rituals, offering deep cultural immersion.
Handloom & Handicrafts Exhibition
Manipur’s famous Phanek, Moirang Phee, and Shawl weaving are showcased by local artisans, along with pottery, bamboo craft, and black stone pottery from Andro Village.
Ethnic Cuisine
Food stalls serve local delicacies such as Eromba, Singju, Chakhao Kheer (black rice pudding), and smoked meat, offering visitors a taste of Manipuri gastronomy.
Adventure & Eco-Tourism Activities
Cycling events, trekking expeditions, and boat rides on Loktak Lake are organized to promote adventure tourism. Birdwatching tours in the Keibul Lamjao National Park give tourists a chance to see the rare Sangai deer and migratory birds.
Indigenous Sports
Demonstrations of Mukna (wrestling), Sagol Kangjei (polo), and Yubi Lakpi (rugby-like game played with a coconut) reflect Manipur’s rich sporting traditions.

Since the festival is held annually in late November, this period offers pleasant weather and a festive atmosphere. It’s advisable to plan accommodation in advance, as hotels in Imphal and nearby areas get booked quickly during the event.
