About Eagle’s Nest Birding Trail

The Eagle’s Nest Birding Trail is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers, located in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Part of the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, this trail meanders through subtropical and temperate forests at altitudes ranging from 500 to 3,250 meters, making it one of the richest avian habitats in the Eastern Himalayas.

Globally famous for the discovery of the Bugun liocichla is a rare bird found nowhere else in the world .The sanctuary offers an unmatched opportunity to observe vibrant birdlife against the backdrop of misty mountains and lush valleys.

Unique Experiences

The trail offers sightings of over 450 bird species, including the majestic Himalayan monal, ward’s trogon, and several species of wren-babblers, laughingthrushes, and hornbills. The varying altitudes along the trail create distinct ecological zones, meaning birdwatchers can spot both tropical lowland species and high-altitude specialists in a single trip.

The soundscape itself is mesmerizing, from the melodic whistles of warblers to the deep calls of barbets. The local Bugun tribe, whose ancestral lands overlap with the sanctuary, are actively involved in conservation, making this not just a birding trip but also a lesson in community-led eco-tourism.

How to Reach

The nearest gateway to the Eagle’s Nest Birding Trail is Tenga Valley, accessible by road from Tezpur in Assam (about 6–7 hours drive). The birding trail has multiple entry points, with Lama Camp being one of the most popular bases for enthusiasts.

Best time to visit

The best birding season is November to April, though the spring months (March–April) offer peak bird activity and colorful forest blooms. Local homestays and eco-camps are available along the trail, often run by Bugun families.
