History and Architecture

Chappan Mahal, constructed in the 6th century AD, is a forgotten mausoleum that houses the Chappan Mahal Museum. Mandu’s medieval architecture, the Chappan Mahal, was constructed in the later phase, or mature phase. In 1899 (Vikram era 1956), the Pura rulers of Dhar initiated the restoration work of the monument to provide relief to the drought-affected population. To pay tribute to Vikramaditya Era, the monument is known as Chappan Mahal.

In 1989, the museum, known as the Chappan Mahal Museum, was set up by Anandji Rao Puar IV’s wife, Mrilanidevi Puar, who donated the property to the collector. The museum was inaugurated exactly in the year 1999 (Vikram Samvat era 2056).

The state archaeological department plays an important role in the museum’s layout. It is divided into four galleries that show historical and tribal artifacts from the region. Amenities like audio, visual aids, lighting arrangements, etc. are recent additions to the museum that increase the overall experience of the visitors.

The galleries of the museum are named Drishyika, Mandapika, Aryanika, and Poorvika.

Drishyika Gallery: Galleries display artifacts and sculptures that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region. Images display Hindu deities, Jain Tirthankars, and various objects of daily use.

The medieval era, including doors, frames, pillars, and lintels, are displayed. Visitors can be in awe of the intricate designs and carvings on these subjects.

Aryanika gallery: As the name suggests, Aryanika means “forest,” where artifacts, jewelry, and clothing from tribal areas are displayed.

Poorvika Gallery: The gallery contains a collection of artifacts like stones that date back to prehistoric times when the evolution of humans began in the region.
