Overview and History of Chhatris Gwalior
Awe-inspiring and historical structure, Chatri Bazar is located at a distance of 6 km from Gwalior junction. These magnificent memorials were built by the Scindia dynasty rulers of Gwalior, Architectural gems are an integral part of the city’s heritage.
In honor of Jayaji Rao Scindia, the first Chhatri was erected in 1817 CE. Contributing to the architectural splendor, the serene garden, and dome-shaped pavilions are defining elements of the overall architecture. Yellow and pink sandstone is used in making old chhatris.
Among the notable Chahatris that stand out are the ones dedicated to Jiwaji Rao Scindia, Janko Ji Rao Scindia, and Daulat Rao Scindia. The combination of pink and white stones enhanced the beauty of the medieval period. Adding to the serene ambiance of the place, a picturesque tank lies between the umbrellas of Madhav Rao Scindia and Maharani Shakya Raje Scindia.
