About Jagan Mohan Palace
A treasure trove of paintings, artifacts, and historical significance, Jagan Mohan Palace is the architectural elegance stand in Mysore. The palace is associated with the Jayachamarajendra art gallery, which is also a revered hub of art and culture. The palace is easily accessible to visitors and located just 2 km from the Mysore railway station.
Originally, the Jagan Mohan Palace was constructed by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as an alternate residence for the royal family. It was constructed to serve as the royal home during the construction of the new Mysore palace after a fire. Built according to Hindu tradition, Jagmohan Palace is a three-story structure . In the early 1900s, the palace underwent further extensions and enhancements.
Historical Roots
Constructed in 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as an alternate residence for the royal family, the Jagan Mohan Palace gained prominence when it served as the royal home during the construction of the new Mysore Palace after a fire. Following traditional Hindu architecture, the palace underwent extensions and enhancements in the early 1900s.
Architecture of Jagan Mohan Palace
The three-story building and palace interiors are beautifully decorated with different styles of paintings. The mural depicting scenes from the Dussehra and family trees of the Woodeyar looks very beautiful. Adding to the artistic ambiance, there is a wooden display of Dashavatre, the ten incarnations of Vishnu. Haldenkar’s painting of the lady with the lamp will definitely win your heart. A miniature painting on the grain of rice will require magnification for viewing.
Beyond painting, there are many things to explore about the culture of the region. The art gallery housing antique coins, sculptures, and musical instruments portrays a great picture of the past. An intriguing French clock features a miniature soldier parade every hour, complete with drum beats and bugle sounds.
Artistic Splendors
In 1915, the Jagmohan was transformed into an art gallery that houses over 2000 paintings representing diverse Indian styles of Mysore, Shantiniketan, and Mughal. In 1955, the name was changed from Jagmohan to Jagan Mohan Palace Art Gallery.

The Jag Mohan Palace has an auditorium to host cultural events like dance and music performances. During the Dussehra festival, many vibrant cultural activities happen that elevate the mood of the palace. It’s also the best time to visit.
Timings and Entry
The Jagan Mohan Palace is open from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., welcoming visitors into its rich cultural tapestry. Entrance fees are Rs. 25 for adults and Rs. 10 for children, ensuring access to a wealth of history and art.
