Ellora

Known for its magnificent rock-cut temples and monasteries, Ellora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Its a confluence of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism which symbolize India’s ancient spirit of tolerance and artistic excellence.

Ellora Caves were carved between the 6th and 10th centuries CE. It consist of 34 rock-cut shrines showcasing intricate sculptures, grand pillars, and stunning carvings that narrate stories from sacred texts.

Geography and Overview

Ellora is located about 30 km from Aurangabad and lies on the Deccan Plateau, surrounded by rugged basalt cliffs of the Sahyadri Hills. The caves were excavated from volcanic basalt rock, making them an extraordinary example of ancient engineering and artistry.

The entire complex is divided into three sections:

Buddhist Caves (1–12): Monasteries and prayer halls adorned with images of the Buddha.
