Spread over an area of 200 acres, the Rao Jodha Desert is a remarkable effort to restore the natural ecology of this rocky wasteland. Opened to the public in 2011, the park is located at a distance of 1 km from Jodhpur Fort and 5 km from Jodhpur Junction. It was opened to the public in 2011.

Ecological Restoration of Rao Jodha Desert

To convert the rocky wasteland into a vibrant green zone around Mehrangarh Fort, Maharaja Gaj Singh II entrusted the task to environmentalist Pradip Krishen. It was the dream of Maharaja Umaid Singh to convert the landscape into a green zone. In 2006, Krishen and his team underwent a metamorphosis that was earlier dominated by an invasive plant from Mexico known as mesquite or Baavila.

Biodiversity Amidst the Rocks and Exploring the Trails

With over 300 species of shrubs, trees, climbers, and herbs, Rao Jodha Desert Park has turned from barren terrain into a paradise for migratory birds and an extensive range of flora. The diverse range of vegetation and herbs flourishing on the rock outcrops is very beautiful to watch.

It provides a unique backdrop to the thriving biodiversity. Despite harsh conditions and distinctive volcanic rock and sandstone formations, plants have adapted to survive in these harsh conditions. There are four well-marked trails that allow visitors to navigate the park’s natural wonders. Trails are marked with color codes of yellow, red, green, and blue.  Train guides and naturalists provided insights into the fauna, flora, and geological formations. Hard Cacati and vibrant wildflowers keep the park’s beauty up close.
