About Nanjundeshwara Temple
Standing on the banks of the Kapila (Kabini) River, Nanjangud is a revered temple town that draws pilgrims and history enthusiasts. The temple is dedicated to Nanjundeshwara, who is a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Located 27 kilometers from Mysore, the temple is believed to date back to the Ganga period.
Mythology
Poisonous Encounter: Legend has it that during the churning of the ocean by gods and demons, poison emerged. To safeguard the universe, Lord Shiva gallantly consumed the poison. This act is commemorated by the name Nanjundeshwara, meaning the God who drank poison.
