Barkur, located 19 km from Udupi Railway Station, holds a rich historical legacy as the ancient capital of the Tulu kingdom, once known as Barakanur. The Seeta River gracefully flows through Barkur, merging with the Arabian Sea.
Once known as Barakanur, the ancient capital of the Tulu kingdom, Barkur is an interesting destination from a bygone era. Sitting on the banks of the Seeta River, Barkur has an interesting history as a port. It was believed that once upon a time, 365 temples were standing in Barkur. Today, remnants of some temples confirmed their existence. The most notable among them is the Panchalingeshwara Temple, situated at the southern end of Barkur. Its characterized by typical tiled roofs. Additionally, Barkur has historical connections as a Jain settlement.
