Religious Significance & Unique Jyotirlinga
Unlike other Jyotirlingas, the linga at Trimbakeshwar is unique as it features three faces symbolising the trinity of Hinduism—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Over time, the linga has been eroding, which is considered a deeply spiritual phenomenon, symbolising the cyclical nature of creation, preservation, and destruction. Due to this, the Shivalinga is covered with a jewelled crown, which is displayed to devotees only on Mondays .
Legends & Mythological Significance
According to Hindu mythology, Trimbak is the palace where the sage performed penance to bring the river Ganga to earth but it resulted in the emergence of the Godavari river. Near the temple, the Gangadwar bathing tank is the place where devotees come to cleanse their sins and past karmas.
Architecture of Trimbakeshwar Temple
The temple is an exquisite example of Nagara-style architecture made of black basalt stone with intricate carvings depicting various Hindu deities and sacred motifs. It was made in the 18th century by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao. A high shikhara (spire) is adorned with beautiful sculptures.
Its the only temple where Narayan-Nagbali puja, a special ritual performed to remove ancestral curses (Pitru Dosha) and resolve past-life karma, is performed.
