Akkalkot Temple, or Akkalkot Swami Samarth Maharaj Temple, is one of the important pilgrimage places in Maharashtra. At a distance of 41 km from Solapur, the temple is a sacred hindu temple situated in Akkalkot.
Discovering the Divine Abode
The temple is the final abode of a revered saint named Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj .The revered saint is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya by his devotees. He is thought to be a reincarnation of Narasimha Saraswati, another prominent figure in the Dattatreya sect.
Known by various names such as ‘Akkalkot Swami, Akalkot Maharaj, Maharaj of Akalkot, and Akalkot Niwasi Maharaj,’ Swami Samarth’s teachings continue to inspire and guide millions around the globe.
A Journey Through Time and Faith
Legend has it that Swami Samarth initially manifested in the Kardali forests near Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. His spiritual journey led him to different destinations until he finally arrived at Akkalkot in 1856, responding to an invitation from Chintopant Tol. He spent about 22 years in Akkalkot, leaving behind a legacy that transcends generations. Even after his physical departure in 1878, his divine presence remains palpable, particularly at the holy Samadhi located in the house of his disciple Cholappa.
The Symbolism of Vatavruksha Swami Mandir
A towering banyan tree (Vatavruksha) within the premises is quite famous, as is the name of the temple, also known as Vatavruksha Swami Mandir. Under this colossal tree, Swami Samarth had meditated and preached to the audience. The tree is a poignant symbol of spiritual enlightenment and tranquility.

An annual observance of Swami Samarth’s death anniversary on Chaitra Shuddha Trayodashi is a significant event held at Akkalkot Temple. During this time, throngs of devotees gather to pay homage to the saint and seek his blessings. Prayers, rituals, and devotional hymns epitomize the enduring reverence for Swami Samarth’s spiritual legacy.

Akkalkot temple is open to visitors from 5am to 10 pm.
