Siju Wildlife Sanctuary, located in South Garo Hills of Meghalaya, is one of the most fascinating natural reserves in the state. Known as the “Bat Sanctuary of India,” it harbors a large population of rare bat species, including the cave-dwelling bat colonies that thrive near Siju Cave.
Spread across dense subtropical forests and rolling hills, the sanctuary is also home to elephants, slow loris, leopards, langurs, and a rich variety of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and nature photographers.

The sanctuary is characterized by thick evergreen forests, bamboo groves, and a rugged landscape intersected by streams and limestone formations.
The presence of the nearby Simsang River adds to its ecological richness. Trekking trails within and around the sanctuary take visitors through thick forests and riverside pathways, offering opportunities to spot elephants or hear the distant calls of hornbills.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to explore Siju Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to April, when the weather is pleasant and the forest trails remain dry and accessible. The monsoon season, though lush, makes trekking and wildlife spotting difficult due to heavy rains and slippery paths.
How to Reach
By Road: Siju Wildlife Sanctuary is about 130 km from Tura and around 220 km from Shillong. Shared taxis and local buses are available, but hiring a private vehicle is more convenient.
Nearest Airport: Shillong Airport (Umroi) is the closest, about 240 km away, while Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (approx. 250 km) offers better connectivity.
Nearest Railway Station: Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest major railhead, about 270 km from Siju. From there, road transport is the only option.
