About Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Morigaon district of Assam, is often referred to as the “Mini Kaziranga” due to its high density of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Spread over about 38 sq. km, this sanctuary is a hidden jewel of Assam that combines grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands to form a thriving ecosystem. For wildlife lovers and birdwatchers, Pobitora offers an authentic Assamese wilderness experience without the heavy tourist rush of Kaziranga.
Biodiversity and Attractions
The sanctuary is home to a large population of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, which makes it one of the best places in India to spot them up close. Apart from rhinos, visitors can also witness wild boars, Asiatic buffaloes, leopards, jackals, and feral horses. Pobitora is equally popular among birdwatchers, as it is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA). During winters, the wetlands attract thousands of migratory birds like the greater adjutant stork, kingfishers, pond herons, and bar-headed geese. The combination of wildlife safaris and birdwatching makes Pobitora a wholesome destination for nature enthusiasts.
Activities and Experiences
Travelers can enjoy jeep safaris and elephant rides, which provide close encounters with rhinos in their natural habitat. The surrounding wetlands and grasslands are also excellent for photography and nature walks, especially during sunrise and sunset when the Brahmaputra valley glows in golden hues. Local cultural experiences, including visits to nearby Assamese villages, add a traditional flavor to the trip.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Pobitora is from November to March, when the weather is pleasant, and the migratory birds flock to the wetlands. During the monsoon, the sanctuary remains closed due to flooding from the Brahmaputra.
