About Karanji Lake
Karanji Lake plays a critical role in groundwater recharge for the surrounding region, and serves as a bio-buffer zone for the Mysuru Zoo. Few know that this lake area also includes a butterfly park, and it’s one of the only urban lakes in India to combine bird conservation, butterfly gardens, and boating in a single location.
Avian Abundance
Spread over an area of 90 acres, the lake hosts over 90 species of both resident and migratory birds. Within the lake, there is an impressive fountain that adds a touch to the natural beauty of the lake. Its serene water flowing above the lake looks picturesque with lush surroundings.
Butterfly Haven
There is a small island within Karanji Lake that provides a delightful garden for visitors to witness the enchanting world of butterflies. The garden has 45 identified species of butterflies.
Royal connection
Historically, the lake was used by the royal family and was considered a part of the palace gardens’ extended water system, making it not just an ecological treasure but also a cultural one.

Despite being located near tourist-heavy spots like Mysore Palace and the zoo, Karanji Lake remains peacefully uncrowded—a serene escape known more to locals and nature lovers than to the average tourist.

Boating Facilities: Karanji Lake offers boating activities, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquil waters. Row boats and pedal boats provide a leisurely means to explore the lake’s beauty.
Boating Timings: Boating is available every day except Tuesdays, from 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM, providing ample opportunities for a refreshing experience on the lake.
Practical Information
Entry Fee: Rs. 50 for adults, Rs. 25 for children, Rs. 10 for cameras, and Rs. 25 for video. The reasonable entry fee makes it accessible for all to relish the natural wonders within.
