About Khundi Mata Lake
Khundi Mata Lake Trek is one of Himachal Pradesh’s lesser-known yet deeply revered trails. Tucked away in the remote reaches of the Churah Valley, the trek offers an experience that blends adventure, spirituality, and a timeless connection between people and the mountains.
A Sacred Destination with Ancient Roots
Dedicated to Goddess Maha Kali, the Khundi Mata Lake is also called Mahakali Lake. The sacred lake has immense religious significance for the locals. According to local beliefs, the goddess once split a giant rock here, and the site has since been a place of worship and pilgrimage for devotees from nearby villages.
The lake is visited by locals and pilgrims during the famous Manimahesh Yatra, one of Himachal’s most celebrated pilgrimages. While Manimahesh attracts thousands every year, the Khundi Mata Lake Trek remains quieter, making it ideal for pilgrims and trekkers who wish to combine spiritual depth with serene landscapes.
When the Valley Comes Alive
The main pilgrimage to Khundi Mata Lake takes place around September, aligning with the traditional Bhadoo Month of the local calendar. Another auspicious time is the Jyeshtha Tuesday, when villagers gather to offer prayers. During this time, the entire trail echoes with the sound of bhajan-kirtan, and temporary langar (community kitchens) serve free meals to pilgrims and trekkers alike.
Simple resting facilities are set up by volunteers and families, reflecting the deep-rooted local traditions of hospitality and devotion.
