Geography and Overview

Chamba sits in the Chamba valley surrounded by the Dhauladhar and Zanskar ranges. It’s located in the northwestern part of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of around 996 meters above sea level. The town lies cloase to popular destinations like Bharmour, Khajjiar, and Dalhousie.

Laxmi Narayan Temple Complex

Built in the 10th century by Raja Sahil Varman, the Laxmi Narayan Temple is the most revered shrine in Chamba. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple showcases exquisite Shikhara-style architecture and intricate stone carvings, reflecting the grandeur of early Himachali craftsmanship.

Rang Mahal

A blend of Mughal and colonial architecture, the Rang Mahal was built by Raja Umed Singh in the 18th century. It once served as the royal residence and later as a granary. The walls are adorned with beautiful Pahari paintings, and today, it houses a handicrafts emporium selling local woolen shawls and traditional Chamba rumals (embroidered handkerchiefs).

Khajjiar – The Mini Switzerland

Just 24 km from Chamba, Khajjiar is often called the Mini Switzerland of India. The lush green meadow surrounded by cedar forests and snow-capped peaks is perfect for picnics, paragliding, and nature walks. The Khajji Nag Temple, dedicated to the serpent god, adds spiritual significance to the spot.

Bhuri Singh Museum

Named after Raja Bhuri Singh, this museum preserves the region’s artistic and cultural heritage. You’ll find collections of ancient coins, miniature Pahari paintings, carved doors, and inscriptions that depict Chamba’s rich royal history.

Chamunda Devi Temple

Perched atop Shah Madar Hill, this temple offers panoramic views of the Chamba Valley and the Ravi River. Dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, it’s known for its wooden architecture and serene spiritual aura.

Manimahesh Lake and Kailash Peak

Located about 65 km from Chamba near Bharmour, Manimahesh Lake sits at an altitude of 4,080 meters, beneath the sacred Kailash Peak. The lake is a major Hindu pilgrimage site, and thousands of devotees undertake the Manimahesh Yatra every August–September.
