A testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage, Manjarabad Fort is an ancient marvel located in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Holding a prominent place among Karnataka’s historical treasures, the ancient marvel is a significant landmark that holds the secrets of the past.
During the monsoon or early winter, the fort is shrouded in mist. Aptly christened, the word “Manjarabad” is derived from the Kannada word “Manju,” meaning “fog or mist.”.
Strategically positioned at an altitude of 3,240 feet, Manjarabad fort was constructed by the visionary ruler Tipu Sultan in 1792. The star-shaped bastion was a crucial post in Tipu Sultan’s defense strategy against British incursions.
Strategic Significance of Manjarabad fort
Manjarabad fort, designed with an intricate octagonal layout, draws inspiration from the military forts designed by the renowned French architect Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban. To exude an aura of impregnability, the fort is crafted from sturdy granite blocks and fortified with a deep moat. Cannon mounts and musket holes punctuate the parapets, serving as a testament to their defensive prowess.
Inside the Fort
Manjarabad inner sanctum is a treasure trove of architectural ingenuity. To store rainwater, there is a cross-shaped tank to fulfill the drinking needs of the garrison, while subterranean cellars store ample gunpowder reserves. Further adding to the fort’s mystique,It was believed that there was a secret tunnel that led to the historic town of Srirangapatna.

You cannot ascend directly to the fort’s entrance. Though ample parking facilities are available at a distance of 200 meters.
